Travis Scott - Rodeo

Artist- Travis Scott

Album - Rodeo

Background: Jacques Bermon Webster II, known professionally as Travis Scott, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer. In 2012, Scott signed his first major-label deal with Epic Records. His career took off when he released a single titled “3500” along with features from Atlanta trap rapper Future and College Park, GA native 2 Chainz. His other single released the same year, “Antidote”, is a solo track that soared to the top of the rap billboards and peaked at #4 on rap. He promoted the album with a mixtape titled “Days Before Rodeo”, which has some of his more memorable songs if you are a true Travis Scott fan.

#1 - Pornography

The intro, was spoken word done by T.I & the beat was made by Sonny Digital, Metro Boomin, & Travis Scott himself. There’s a beat switch at 2 minutes and 30 seconds which switches to a darker, evil beat that includes lines like “Houston nigga goin’ James Harden”. The intro that T.I does goes on and on, making a full 46 seconds of the song which is only 3 minutes and 52 seconds long.

#2- Oh Dis My Side ft. Quavo

This song features 2 parts, “Oh My” which is a more hype and energetic beat and flow. The entire songs has Quavo, 1/3rd of the rap trio named “Migos”, based out of Atlanta, Georgia. “Dis Side” is Travis Scott reminiscing on is his suburb of Houston, Missouri City, Texas. Travis drops reminiscent line “really miss the feeling of the late nights”, which gives the feeling of sadness and the thought that Travis misses his old life.

#3- 3500 ft. Future & 2 Chainz

This was a single that made the album, after reaching 18 on the rap billboard and receiving gold from the RIAA in July 23, 2017. This beat was made by Zaytoven, Metro Boomin’, Mano, and Travis Scott. The song includes a memorable one-liner, “Flyin' through, I got a young 'Yonce with a Iggy on her”.

#4- Wasted ft. Juicy J

Juicy J, a rapper from Memphis, Tennessee, is the co-founder of legendary rap group named “Three 6 Mafia”. He features and gives off the energy that he once bought to his old music, being heavily inspired by the current southern rap scene in the 1990’s. The hook for this song is very strong, done by now dead one half of UGK, Pimp C : “It's really going down in the goddamn south, I'm trill, I'm country 'til the end.”

#5- 90210 ft.Kacy Hill

Kacy Hill is a Phoenix, Arizona who is a model and a singer who features on this song that has a beat switch in the middle of the song. The now-hyped beat switched has one of Travis Scott’s best verses, with lines like, “All you niggas, you niggas want, that's why you can't have it” & “Hit the stage, they got their hands up, don't put your nose down;I ain't knockin' a nigga, I knocked the door down, for sure now”. The first half includes harmonizing vocals from Kacy Hill but on a deluxe version of the album, there is spoken word on the first half. The beat was produced by Wondagurl & DJ Dahi.

#6- Pray 4 Love ft. The Weeknd

Pray 4 Love is one of the many flawless features on this album, featuring R&B artist “The Weeknd” from Toronto, Canada. Both Rodeo and Beauty Behind the Madness released in mid 2015, dropping only 7 days apart from each other. The introduction features harmonizing as well with the line “Oh, don't pray for love; Oh, say love; Just ask the lonely, oh”. The song has a calm energy to it, as well as a verse from The Weeknd starting 3 minutes and 48 seconds into the song, making it a great way to wrap up the song.

#7- Nightcrawler ft. Swae Lee & Chief Keef

This song has Chief Keef, a Chicago, Illinois native. Chicago is known for starting the sub-genre of rap “Drill Rap”, being an aggressive, loud form of rap and also for being extremely violent, having 589 murders in 2018 alone. Swae Lee is known for being ½ of rap duo Rae Sremmurd. Swae Lee is from Inglewood, California but moved to the Tupelo, Mississippi when he was younger. The song has verses from all 3 rappers starting with Travis Scott’s verse, using lines like “Hotter than the summer, the winter couldn't chill me”. Swae Lee then comes with one-liners like “ I don't need your drank, high off life”. Chief Keef’s verse is arguable the best verse on this song with memorable lines like “walked up in the bank, ordered me some funds; Walked in the strip club, order me some ones; walked up in a gun store, order me some guns”.

#8- Piss In Your Grave ft. Kanye West.

Pissing in someone’s grave is seen as disrespectful and that’s the energy I believe Kanye West and Travis Scott were going for, making an extremely chaotic song. Kanye West is a rap mogul, who is known for his albums that shifted the rap scene, his sneaker collaboration, and recently, his insane Twitter rants. “Kamikaze over commas”, Travis Scott says, but has no meaning to the song because a kamikaze pilot is a Japanese plane strapped with explosives, going to make a suicide bombing. Kanye West says “Hop outta lamb, hop onto the ‘gram” referencing the instagram account he once had, but was deleted by his wife because of his controversial statements that he often rants about. Kanye West once said “400 years of slavery sounds like a choice”, causing a lot of people to lose respect for him and getting unfollowed by many artists, including Travis Scott himself.

#9 - Antidote

Antidote is one of Travis Scott’s most memorable songs, that landed him top 20 in 2015 as a single and includes line “Don’t you open up that window, Don’t you let out the antidote”. The beat was created by Eestbound and Wondagurl. The single was a part of the 2015 rap scene that made his career into what it became in 2018. This song has a nostalgia feel when i listen to it because it was always on the radio during the summer when it became popular. This remains a top 15 favorite song of his entire discography because this single attracted more fans to him, which he deserved.

#10- Impossible

Impossible has a somber, sad vibe to it, like “Drugs You Should Try” or “Grey” on Days Before Rodeo. Impossible is Travis feeling alone, thus the line “This the time of the year I feel alone”. At only 4 minutes long, this song is depressing & accomplishes the goal to make any 1st time listener feel some emotion, especially if they can relate to what he is saying.

#11- Maria I’m Drunk ft. Young Thug & Justin Bieber

Maria I’m Drunk has a beat switch, common already on this album. The first part is Travis singing, asking for a woman named Maria, to come to his side. The second part includes a mellow, slow vibe but has heavy bass and lines like “Yeah, that thing wet, baby, I need skis” from Young Thug, Atlanta based rapper who is also well known in the trap rap genre and a fashion mogul as well. Justin Bieber is a Ontario, Canada based singer who has top hits like “Sorry” and “What Do You Mean?”. Justin’s part is soothing but includes one-liners that are hard like “girl I want you on the rocks, no chaser”

#12- Flying High ft. Toro y Moi

Toro y Moi is is an American singer, songwriter, record producer and graphic designer. The beat was made by Pharrell, rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and fashion designer. Pharrell is from Virginia Beach, Virginia. Toro Y Moi is from South Carolina. In my honest opinion, this is one of those forgettable tracks from rodeo that was probably just filler. Even as a forgettable track, this is a mellow banger, with the vocals from Toro Y Moi being really enjoyable and calm.

#13- I Can Tell

This song features no autotune, the main complaint of many rap listeners. The beat itself was created by Fki 1st, which has a dark, mellow feel to it, perfect to match Travis Scott’s voice. This song includes eccentric lines like “Always hit the gas like I broke wind” but hard, dark lines like “Nigga you know I been a rocker, dripping milk and knockers”. This has to be one of my favorite lines on the entire album, as a rager and as a fan of Travis Scott’s songs where they feel dark in energy like this one.

#14- Apple Pie

Apple Pie starts off with what sounds like clicking, that intros into a piano with spacy bass. The beat was made by 1500 or Nothin’ and Terrace Martin. Terrace Martin is a musician, rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer and actor from Los Angeles, California He is perhaps best known for producing records for several prominent artists in the music industry, including Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, The Game, Busta Rhymes, Stevie Wonder, Charlie Wilson, Raphael Saadiq and YG among others.

Apple Pie includes a peaceful, mellow vibes with lines like “Keep an ounce of garlic just to keep away the Draculas” and “Look bitch, this the Rodeo, But I ain't goin' out for your bullshit”. The flow from the 2nd verse is amazing to me, to this day and deserves much more attention. Just like how T.I did the intro, he does the outro with mesmerizing last line, “Yet and still, the question that arises to the mind, Will you make it? Was it worth it? Did he win? Will he survive, the Rodeo?”.
