D Smoke - "Black Habits": The Most Underrated Album No One Has Heard.

is a 16-track album by D Smoke. The album taps into the themes of the celebration of blackness, black habits cover.jpg
the following of a family with drug addiction, incarceration, a father being separated from a family, long distance love, and redemption. D Smoke grew up in Inglewood, California. Inglewood is known for looking like an innocent town, while at the same time being one of the most deadly towns in California. Black Habits is the history of D's childhood as he grew up. The album is intoxicating to listen to and incredibly catchy, hence why Kendrick Lamar is one of his biggest influencers. I...

NAV - Good Intentions [Review]

NAV - Good Intentions
Not to say NAV's style has changed here, but he's finally shed off the dorky characteristics that held his music back beforehand. With better beat selection, higher energy and significantly better flows, NAV actually delivers here.

The production here is some of the best he's been on since his joint with Metro Boomin and foregoes the previous atmospheric sound that he was often stuck in in the past. Here he returns to the form of his debut mixtape, delivering highly melodic and careful, semi-robotic flows over great beats. When it falls into slower, woozy styles, it's usually balanced out with a more dynamic and interesting flow to compensate. A wide, lush mix across the project makes the entire project hella immersive for most of its runtime. On Overdose ambient clang drifting through the background feel like bits of rubble in space that NAV's rapping jumps between through zero gravity.

The features here are...

To begin, I just want to say that you have the right to your own opinion and do not have to agree with me, because some of you are mongoloids I had to say this. Thank you to @Offset for being the coolest admin ever.

17 by Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy or better known as XXXTENTACION, is an album that is beloved by fans with a spice of critics and also unloved by listeners and critics. The album in X's words is to help those who are down and feel lost as he tries to help by ensuring that they are not alone. This album doesn't approach every person in the world as some humans are for a lack of better terms, built different. Not everyone is going to enjoy an entire album that is filled with lyrics about heartbreak, loneliness, and... pain. To start the review I'm going to push right into the music excluding the first track "The Explanation".

Jocelyn Flores - Jocelyn Flores was one of X's...

Artist 2.0 Review
by Leakify

Artist 2.0 comes at an important time for A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie. While his last project Hoodie SZN was a massive commercial success, it received a mixed reception and left fans hungry for a definitive A Boogie project that would cement him as a superstar. Even A Boogie himself admitted that he does not think he is deserving of the title “King of New York” just yet, saying, "Realistically, I'm not there yet. I still have some growing [to do]. Until I feel comfortable to say it, I'm not saying it”. Artist 2.0 is the follow up to 2016’s Artist, in which A Boogie focuses on deeper subject matter such as relationship and love. Considering how essential Artist was in catapulting A Boogie’s early career, it is clear that he intends to make a project that is more refined than the original. In interviews, A...

Leak Lore: Disguise

Hi everyone, welcome to Leak Lore, a new weekly series all about the history behind leaks and leakers. I hope to cover all sorts of genres and maybe even expand outside of music eventually. Let me know what kinds of stuff you'd like to see in future installments. All that aside, let's get into the story behind one of the most prolific leaks of all time, Young Thug's "Disguise."

Young Thug is an artist known for many things. Some know him as the rapper who wears dresses, some know him as the YSL label boss, some know him as the father of the current generation of rappers, and others know him for dozens of other reasons. However, his most dedicated fans know him for previewing songs that he has no intention of dropping. There are hundreds of Young Thug snippets all over the internet, sourced from Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Youtube, and really any place Thugger or his crew can preview a song. A few snippets end up...

In Metro Boomin We Trust

To say that producers play an important role in hip-hop is the understatement of the century. Without producers making beats, there wouldn't be rap music. Some would say that producers are the unsung heroes of hip-hop, and don't get the credit they deserve. Years ago, I might have agreed. However, the music world has grown, and producers have begun to share the spotlight with the rappers and singers they work with. That's largely thanks to Leland Wayne, or as you might know him, Metro Boomin.

Metro was born and raised in St. Louis, but he's famous for his work in Atlanta. Metro started making beats when he was in high school, and when he was in 11th grade, he started to make connections with 1017 Bricksquad, a label founded and owned by Gucci Mane. Metro's mother would drive him back and forth to Georgia, an 8 hour drive, so that he could deliver beats to OJ Da Juiceman. OJ was the first popular rapper to work with Metro, and some of Metro's earliest placements were on OJ's...
House Of Balloons: An In-Depth Analysis of The Weeknd's Essential Debut Mixtape
  • 7,686
  • 51
As we start this new decade, I think it's important to take a look back at what was arguably the most influential project of the last one. Trilogy, a compilation released in 2012 by The Weeknd, has had an impact on modern music that rivals Kanye West's 808's & Heartbreaks. Trilogy contains the first three mixtapes released by The Weeknd, House Of Balloons, Thursday, & Echoes of Silence. The story of Trilogy is a long one, so long in fact that in this article, I will only cover House Of Balloons, the debut project.

The year is 2010. With the turn of the decade, the music world is excitedly awaiting what the 10's will bring to the table. Kanye West is in hibernation after last year's VMA debacle, but knowing him he is working on something incredible. Lil Wayne is trying to release Tha Carter IV, a project that wouldn't see release for nearly two more years, despite already missing a release date. However, the most promising...
Death Grips: The Cutting Edge of Experimental Hip-Hop
  • 2,201
  • 20
Introduction

Death Grips is an experimental hip-hop group based in Sacramento, California that was formed in 2010. The group consists of 3 members: MC Ride, the frontman and vocalist; Zach Hill, the driving creative force as well as their drummer and producer; and Andy Morin, who serves as the keyboardist and recording engineer as well as an additional producer. Their style is somewhat notorious for being very abrasive, in fact it might not even be fair to call them just an experimental hip-hop group, as they seem to transcend that. They incorporate many sonic elements from different genres into their projects as well, including punk, industrial, electronic and noise rock styles.

Many of those who had just listened to Death Grips for the first time don't like them, in fact, most hate them initially. Despite this, there's something about their music that gets people coming back to it, even if they dislike them at first. After a little...

Album Of The Decade

Kanye West

Background:

After a barrage of legal and public image controversy over Kanye’s mental state, the album was created during the time Kanye spent in Oahu, Hawaii. After an embarrassing moment during the VMAs after Taylor Swift won the video of the year in 2009, he received backlash from all corners. Around the same time he lost both his mother and his fiance almost in a years span, he recorded 808's and...

To start the Leaks of the Year off, it feels fitting to start with the artist that got many of us into the leak community, Kanye West. This year was undoubtably the biggest year for Kanye leaks we've had yet, with almost an entire scrapped era of leaks. After Kanye postponed his album Yandhi several times, and presumably cancelled it, many fans were left wondering what could have been. However, this years leaks have allowed us to hear many demos and finished songs from the album. Some highlights include Alien / Space X, Last Name/Slave Name, Hurricane, and my personal favorite...
