House Of Balloons: An In-Depth Analysis of The Weeknd's Essential Debut Mixtape
  • 3,375
  • 41
As we start this new decade, I think it's important to take a look back at what was arguably the most influential project of the last one. Trilogy, a compilation released in 2012 by The Weeknd, has had an impact on modern music that rivals Kanye West's 808's & Heartbreaks. Trilogy contains the first three mixtapes released by The Weeknd, House Of Balloons, Thursday, & Echoes of Silence. The story of Trilogy is a long one, so long in fact that in this article, I will only cover House Of Balloons, the debut project.

The year is 2010. With the turn of the decade, the music world is excitedly awaiting what the 10's will bring to the table. Kanye West is in hibernation after last year's VMA debacle, but knowing him he is working on something incredible. Lil Wayne is trying to release Tha Carter IV, a project that wouldn't see release for nearly two more years, despite already missing a release date. However, the most promising...
Death Grips: The Cutting Edge of Experimental Hip-Hop

  • 20

Death Grips is an experimental hip-hop group based in Sacramento, California that was formed in 2010. The group consists of 3 members: MC Ride, the frontman and vocalist; Zach Hill, the driving creative force as well as their drummer and producer; and Andy Morin, who serves as the keyboardist and recording engineer as well as an additional producer. Their style is somewhat notorious for being very abrasive, in fact it might not even be fair to call them just an experimental hip-hop group, as they seem to transcend that. They incorporate many sonic elements from different genres into their projects as well, including punk, industrial, electronic and noise rock styles.

Many of those who had just listened to Death Grips for the first time don't like them, in fact, most hate them initially. Despite this, there's something about their music that gets people coming back to it, even if they dislike them at first. After a little...

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy:

Album Of The Decade

Kanye West

After a barrage of legal and public image controversy over Kanye’s mental state, the album was created during the time Kanye spent in Oahu, Hawaii. After an embarrassing moment during the VMAs after Taylor Swift won the video of the year in 2009, he received backlash from all corners. Around the same time he lost both his mother and his fiance almost in a years span, he recorded 808's and...

To start the Leaks of the Year off, it feels fitting to start with the artist that got many of us into the leak community, Kanye West. This year was undoubtably the biggest year for Kanye leaks we've had yet, with almost an entire scrapped era of leaks. After Kanye postponed his album Yandhi several times, and presumably cancelled it, many fans were left wondering what could have been. However, this years leaks have allowed us to hear many demos and finished songs from the album. Some highlights include Alien / Space X, Last Name/Slave Name, Hurricane, and my personal favorite...

Due to the fact that Highest in the Room was released before Jackboys, and this is a remix, I'm mostly just reviewing the new additions to the song. I didn't mind the original song, but I felt like this version was a mess. Rosalia, a spanish singer, doesn't mash well at all with Lil Baby following up right after her. To be fair, it is a remix, so it's up to the listener to decide what version they want to listen to, but for people that only want to listen to the Lil Baby addition... it just doesn't really make sense. The Lil Baby verse isn't bad either, but it's nothing to write home about. As a final thought, Rosalia saying...

Jeffery and the Dress: The Story Behind the JEFFERY Cover
by: @Panic

The cover art for the album JEFFERY from the artist Young Thug is (in my opinion) one of the most powerful and transformative cover arts of the 2010’s. It's up there with the likes of Yeezus, Blonde, and many others as eye-catching and recognizable covers in our recent memories. Once you see that dress you instantly think of Young Thug, the flamboyant hood rapper and his masterfully crafted music.

The Curious Case of "DP vs. the World"

(TLDR at the end for those who don't want to read all of this :) )

While trying to locate Uzi loosies from years ago, I stumbled upon the Genius page for . This is a "compilation" put out by DP Beats on August 11, 2017, containing 10(well 9 really but we'll get to that later) DP produced Uzi songs. This compilation was released as a soundcloud playlist, in a move that at first seems logical but is actually quite confusing when examined further. When you think of Uzi in August 2017, I'm sure you immediately think of the Luv Is Rage 2 hype at the time, coming fresh off the "Luv Is Rage 1.9" Don Cannon premieres. Putting out an Uzi compilation seems like a smart move, hyping up both Uzi and DP ahead of Luv Is Rage 2's release. However, not a single DP produced song was featured on Luv Is Rage 2, which I'm sure DP would have been aware of...

Notable Bar:

"Feeling like Kurt Cobain

Feeling like so insane

I got love on the brain

Drugs in the vein and I feel like I could fly"

If you had told me that Post Malone ft. Rich the Kid would have made it top LOTW, I wouldn't have believed you, but either due to the drought of quality leaks this week or the unexpected quality of this collaboration, it lands a spot at #5...
My Experience listening through Young Thug's entire Released / Unreleased Catalog in Chronological Order. (2013-2019)

This write up includes the released and unreleased material from the era, for EPs such as Young Martha and Hear No Evil they are included in the era they belong in. This is my personal opinion and thoughts after listening to the entire released / unreleased thug catalog of music (1017 Thug Sessions - So Much Fun) in chronological order in 8 days. It was about 50hr of music and truly showed his transformation, I did not include anything before Tha Tour as I am still not as familiar with it compared to many Young Thug stans but i will include a write up of 1017 Thug and such when I listen to it more.

Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1 - Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug had a very synergized chemistry and were explosive on Tha Tour. This is a classic album that contains some of his best early work. The unreleased from this era is very good as well and could've made a entire other mixtape, 'Pour It Up' & 'Good Times (ended up being released with a...

PARTYNEXTDOOR is no stranger to remaining quiet in terms of dropping music. Fans of his have been waiting for the longest time for an official release, thriving off his various leaks throughout the past two years. Prayers were answered on the 22nd of November when PARTYNEXTDOOR officially released two tracks, one titled 'Loyal' which featured Drake, and 'The News'. Jahron (PARTYNEXTDOOR) blessed fans with two quite different tracks in terms of vibes and both have been overall well received, one more than the other however.

This blog will go into the depths of the two tracks and what they might mean to a general fan of PARTYNEXTDOOR, as well as a personal opinion (my own).

The News. A track that, despite being overshadowed by the bigger release 'Loyal' due to...

Symere Woods, professionally known as Lil Uzi Vert, was born July 31st, 1994. Uzi originated from Francisville, Philadelphia, PA. Lil Uzi Vert started associating himself with different musical groups such as Steaktown when he was just 16 years of age. Then in 2015, he released his first album LIR or formally known just as “LUV Is Rage”. The album was very highly viewed and very well made, which led to a contract with Atlantic Records. A year after, he released one of his best singles around, “Money Longer” which was top 54 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song later hit platinum, gaining Uzi a lot of recognition.
